Coupon codes are usually entered during the checkout step of your purchase. Usually on the page where you enter your credit card information, there will be a box which ask you to enter coupon code - enter your coupon code there.
If your coupon code is attached to a banner or link with the code written in, then when you click the banner or link to purchase, the code is automatically entered into the checkout cart.
Check to make sure the code has been enter and discount credited before finalizing or clicking the confirm order button. Above all make sure the merchant has a secure site when entering credit card and personal information. Look for the lock at the bottom of the browser.
